By moving the bearings outside of the bottom bracket shell, some of the problems of traditional bottom brackets can be addressed, like stiffness, durability of the crank BB junction, and bearing quality. The X-Type system puts the bearings into sealed cartridge units placed outboard of the bottom bracket.
